Discover one of Sri Lanka's most recognisable traditional crafts from inside a working batik studio. Learn how designs are drawn onto fabric, how wax is carefully applied to preserve sections of the pattern, and how layers of colour gradually bring the finished piece to life.
Rather than simply watching a demonstration, spend time with the artisan and try the process yourself. There is something particularly satisfying about leaving with a piece that you have helped create — a personal reminder of your time in Ceylon.
Batik has become an important part of Sri Lanka's contemporary craft tradition, combining local artistic influences with techniques introduced to the island during the twentieth century.
